How to collect your blood sample

Collecting a finger-prick blood sample is a quick and easy process providing you follow the correct technique.

This form of blood testing is new to most people, so we’ve created a simple ‘how to’ video to help you get it right.

If you follow our tips our lab will have no trouble analysing your sample.

Best time to take your blood sample

Some tests contain biomarkers that need to be taken at certain times of the day, such as within 3 hours or waking.

Our female hormone tests need to be taken on specific days in a woman’s menstrual cycle.

Have your blood sample taken at home

You can arrange to have your blood sample taken by a nurse in your own home at a time that suits you.

During checkout, select the ‘Home phlebotomy appointment’ option underneath ‘Collection method’ in the basket. Once you’ve placed your order, you’ll receive a call from our home phlebotomy partner within 2 working days of placing your order to arrange a suitable time (please note, this is a third party provider and not a service provided by Edge directly).

We’ll despatch a phlebotomy kit directly to you which contains everything the nurse needs to take your blood sample. Please do not attempt to use this kit yourself.

Once the nurse has collected your blood sample, you’ll be given the tubes to label and package up to post back to us on the same day as the sample was taken.

How to make a clinic appointment

You can arrange to have your blood sample taken at one of our partner clinics at a time that suits you.

During checkout, select the ‘Partner clinic’ option underneath ‘Collection method’ in the basket. Once you’ve placed your order, we’ll send you an email with details on how to book your in-clinic appointment.

We’ll despatch a phlebotomy kit directly to you which contains everything the nurse needs to take your blood sample. Please do not attempt to use this kit yourself.

On the day of the appointment, take your kit and a form of ID with you.

Once the nurse has collected your blood sample, you’ll be given the tubes to label and package up to post back to us on the same day as the sample was taken.

Blood sample collection and HRT/hormonal contraception

Our MyFORM® RED-S test cannot be taken by women using HRT or hormonal contraception as the test only works for women having a natural menstrual cycle. This is because a blood sample needs to be taken on day 14 and day 21 of a woman’s period.

All other tests containing hormones can be taken by women on HRT or hormonal contraception.

Blood sample collection and medications

Some medications, such as antibiotics, can influence your results while others won’t. So it’s always best to check with us first if you are on any medication by contacting help@edgesupport.co.uk. Or you can use our ‘contact us’ form on this page.

We will advise you on whether to take the test, or if it’s best to wait until you’ve completed your course of medication.
